Cannonballs: Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen woes continue

Published

on

The Pittsburgh Pirates are now 1/6 of the way through their 162-game schedule and are struggling mightily in the bullpen department. What better time than now to bring you Episode 2 of Cannonballs, a weekly debate on all things Pirates.

This week’s edition featured two professionals in Josh Taylor of KDKA TV and 93.7 The Fan and Alex Stumpf of LockedonPirates.com battling it out for Cannonballs supremacy. Hosted this week by yours truly, Jarrod Prugar, these two brought the house down with their intellectual debate on Pittsburgh baseball.

Our contestants debated over their expectations for the Pirates being modified based on the hot start, the pulse of the clubhouse without Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen, as well as how long it would take for the bullpen woes to be exploited.

Let Alex and Josh cheer you up after a dismal Pirates game last night with their hot debate and quality baseball talk.

Takeaways and Throwaways

Each day after a game, Locked on Pirates will list the Takeaways and Throwaways (TNTs) from the previous day’s Pittsburgh Pirates game. Think of it as the “need to know” in bite sized format!

Results: Cubs 13 Pirates 5

Takeaways:

  • Sean Rodriquez crushed a mammoth three-run homer to get the Buccos on the board first, before Chicago marched back in the bottom half of the second inning. The advanced statistics on Sean Rod’s 422-foot blast: 110-mph exit velocity with a maximum height of 124-feet and launch angle of 22-degrees.
  • Role players continuing to get on base is imperative to the team’s success this season especially with a smaller bench. Both David Freese and Steven Brault had two hits on the evening with Freese hitting a garbage time homer in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Cubs’ lead to seven runs while Brault singled twice and is currently hitting .333 on the season.

Throwaways

  • The bullpen was exploited in a big way Wednesday night against Chicago and it showed in the lopsided loss at the hands of the Cubs.
  • While Tyler Glasnow got the loss, his outing was not nearly as bad as it looked on paper. Glasnow struckout Javier Baez to get the inning started, but his curveball squirted away from Francisco Cervelli and allowed Baez to reach first safely. The Cubs followed that up with a weak grounder to first advancing Baez to second where the speedy Baez then stole third. Tommy La Stella hit a weak grounder to Josh Harrison who rushed his throw home and it hit about 10-feet in front of the plate allowing Baez to score easily. A single and a double later and Glasnow finally recorded another out.
  • Josh Smoker got rocked to the tune of four runs on five hits himself and the rout was on. Smoker rarely missed the barrel of Cubs’ hitters’ bats making a recipe for disaster and they ended up making him pay. The lefty saw his ERA sky rocket from 0.00 prior to his appearance to 9.00 by then end of his appearance.

Today I had the pleasure of talking to Joe Block for the latest Locked on Pirates podcast.

The Pittsburgh Pirates found a good one when they brought in Joe Block to their announce team prior to the 2016 season. He graciously granted me some time for the Locked on Pirates podcast today while the club is in San Francisco. It was a lively talk that was very eye-opening in many ways. Here ya go:

Hear Joe’s thoughts on:

  • The role of analytics and advanced stats in his broadcast.
  • The maturation of Gregory Polanco
  • The “creaminess” of the current Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen,
  • And much more!
