Is the sample size big enough yet? And other Pittsburgh Pirates talk

Published

on

In this episode of Clear the Deck, Locked on Pirates manager Jason Rollison  joins Alex Stumpf to talk all things Pittsburgh Pirates. They review the week that was, predict the week ahead and try to figure out if the sample size is big enough yet.

The Pittsburgh Pirates rebounded from a listless performance against the lowly Miami Marlins in the first game of their three-gamer in Miami to take the series two games to one. Starling Marte is ripping the cover off the ball, Josh Bell continues to produce runs and Corey Dickerson is approaching national treasure status. Rollison and Stumpf talk about it all and turn their eyes to next week in the latest episode of Clear the Deck:

Takeaways and Throwaways

Each day, Locked on Pirates will list the Takeaways and Throwaways (TNTs) from the previous day’s Pittsburgh Pirates game. Think of it as the need to know in bite sized format!

Result: Pirates 7, Marlins 3

Takeaways

  • Marte enjoyed a 5-for-5 day that was capped by a no-doubter of a solo home run shot. Marte has finally found the right spot in the order at the right time, and the Pittsburgh Pirates are reaping the rewards.
  • Bell and Dickerson combined to go 5-for-9 with five RBI. Dickerson pushed his hit streak up to 10 games.
  • Starter Ivan Nova shook off a bases loaded situation in the first — in which he allowed just one run to score — and gave the team 6.2 innings of three-run ball along with nine strikeouts. He was gassed in the seventh – and gave up a monster shot to Justin Bour – but the Pittsburgh Pirates will certainly take a start like that from Nova each time out.
  • The club’s ideal 7-8-9 relief combination of Michael Feliz, George Kontos and Felipe Vazquez went out and did their jobs, with one hit between the three against four strikeouts.

Throwaways

  • Josh Harrison exited the game after taking a pitch to the forearm/hand area. Harrison did not seem to need any assistance, splint, cast, etc. after the game, but will be re-evaluated in Pittsburgh tomorrow.
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates struck out 11 times — nine times from non pitchers. The Pirates can get away with that against a team like the Marlins, but that may not play as well against better quality opponents.

Interview: Pittsburgh Pirates announcer Joe Block

Today I had the pleasure of talking to Joe Block for the latest Locked on Pirates podcast.

The Pittsburgh Pirates found a good one when they brought in Joe Block to their announce team prior to the 2016 season. He graciously granted me some time for the Locked on Pirates podcast today while the club is in San Francisco. It was a lively talk that was very eye-opening in many ways. Here ya go:

Hear Joe’s thoughts on:

  • The role of analytics and advanced stats in his broadcast.
  • The maturation of Gregory Polanco
  • The “creaminess” of the current Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen,
  • And much more!
